my queen wolf and I
standing alone before starlight, twinkling
snow piled high on sagged pine branches
stretched before us lay frozen field and lake
my queen wolf and I, we bend our ears
still silence of a northern winter’s night
hours before the dawn’s first birds call
hark! the howl that echoes off the stars
alone we are, save the silence
alone save the cold, the snow, the trees
and the howl that calls to us
as we clench hands tightly together
breathing deeply, breathing as one
my queen wolf and I bend heads starward
and howl back
